Software design and development

Two Unit Board Developed Course (BDC) Category A

The focus of this course is the development of computer based solutions that require the design of computer software. Students develop the skills to design and develop software. It may include programming in a number of languages and working with the features of commercial software packages. Students work on projects that will help them develop logical problem solving skills, technical literacy, skills in project management as well as collaborative teamwork and communication skills.

A major project is undertaken in the Year 12 course that is valued at 35% of the school assessment mark.

While there are no pre-requisites or assumed knowledge for this course, students should have a keen interest in computing and programming. It is strongly advised that students selecting this course be capable of studying Mathematics Advanced.

Course modules:

  • social and ethical Issues
  • hardware and software
  • software development approaches
  • the software development cycle
  • team project to develop a software solution.

Year 12

Course modules:

  • concepts, issues and processes covered in the Preliminary course are studied at a more complex level culminating the development of a software package rather than merely a software solution
  • evolution of programming languages
  • the interrelationship between hardware and software from a programming viewpoint.
