Mathematics extension

One unit Board Developed Course (BDC)

The extension course must be studied with Mathematics Advanced. It is a recommended minimum for tertiary studies in mathematics as a major discipline and for the study of mathematics in the physical and engineering sciences.

The course is intended for students who have displayed mastery of Stage 5 mathematics outcomes. Students with outstanding mathematical ability should consider undertaking the Extension 2 course in Year 12.

Year 11

Topics:

  • functions polynomials
  • inverse trigonometric functions 
  • further trigonometric identities
  • calculus: rates of change
  • combinatorics.

Year 12

Extension 1 topics:

  • proof by mathematical induction
  • vectors
  • further calculus skills applications of calculus
  • statistical analysis: the binomial distribution.

Extension 2 topics:

  • proof by mathematical induction
  • vectors
  • advanced calculus skills applications of calculus to mechanics.
