English advanced

Two Unit Board Developed Course (BDC)

In this course students explore the ways that events, experiences, ideas, and processes are represented in and through texts. It requires students to analyse and evaluate texts through critical readings. Students will further develop their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing.

Additional information: All students in standard and advanced English will study a common course initially. The courses will be differentiated to cater for the learning of all students.

Students who wish to study English Extension must select English Advanced.

Year 11

Students will study a range of text types drawn from prose fiction, drama, poetry, nonfiction, film, media and digital texts. One text will be a Shakespearean drama. Students need to support their study of texts with their own wide reading.

Course modules:

  • Reading to write (common module)
  • Narratives that shape our world
  • Critical study of literature

Year 12

Students will study four prescribed texts closely, one drawn from each of the following categories: 

  • Shakespearean drama 
  • prose fiction 
  • poetry or drama

Course modules:

  • Texts and human experiences
  • Textual conversations
  • Critical study of literature
  • The craft of writing
