INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY TIMBER PRODUCTS AND FURNITURE TECHNOLOGIES
Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units
This course is ideal for students who enjoy hands-on, practical learning in a workshop setting who are interested in timber, furniture design, and manufacturing.
Students should be creative thinkers with an interest in design and production who spire to pursue careers in areas such as cabinetmaking, joinery, carpentry, furniture design, interior design, architecture, or engineering.
Students will gain valuable project management, design, and technological skills that provide a strong foundation for employment or further study in construction, manufacturing, design, or trades.
Complements other subjects such as Design & Technology, Engineering Studies, Mathematics, Visual Arts, or Business Studies
PRE-REQUISITES
No formal prerequisites are required, though students who have previously enjoyed and succeeded in practical or technical subjects may find this course particularly engaging.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Both the Preliminary and HSC courses are structured around four core areas:
• Industry Study – Examining the structure
practices, and issues in the timber and furniture industry
• Design, Management, and Communication – Learning how to design products, manage time and resources, and communicate ideas through sketches, plans, CAD, and folios
• Production – Gaining hands-on experience through constructing practical projects
• Industry-Related Manufacturing Technology – Understanding materials, processes, tools, and machinery used in the industry
HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
60% – Major Project & Folio (marked externally)
40% – Written Exam (includes multiple choice, short responses, and extended responses)
UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS COURSE
• The Major Project must reflect high levels of planning, craftsmanship, and documentation
• Access to tools, machines, and CAD software (e.g. Onshape) is provided
• Students must wear enclosed leather shoes in all practical workshop sessions for safety
• Students may study Industrial Technology Timber and VET Furniture Making Pathways concurrently.
