Physics

PHYSICS

Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units

The Year 11 course introduces the basics of motion, how it’s described, and what causes it. It also explores different types of energy, and how electricity and magnetism work and interact.

The Year 12 course builds on this by applying these ideas to motion in two dimensions, electromagnetism, the nature of light, and the properties of atoms.

Physics provides essential knowledge and skills for further study and careers in areas such as engineering, technology, health, and research. It is a discipline that encourages innovative and creative thinking to solve complex problems. Physics plays a key role in addressing global challenges, including sustainability, energy efficiency, and the development of new materials and technologies.

Relevant industries include Construction, Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services, Manufacturing, Mining, and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

PREFERRED PRE-REQUISITES

It is highly recommended students complete the Advanced Science Curriculum Proficiency Assessment along with satisfactory completion of Year 10 Science.

The study of Advanced Mathematics is strongly recommended, as the Physics course involves mathematical skills such as using formulas, interpreting data, performing calculations, and analysing trends.

UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS COURSE

Practical investigations are an essential part of both the Year 11 and Year 12 course and must occupy a minimum of 35 hours of course time, including time allocated to practical investigations in depth studies.

Students can combine Physics with ONE or TWO other Science courses selected from Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science or Investigating Science.

Further information is available on the NESA website.

If a student qualifies, the Physical World Science Life Skills Course is available in mainstream classes. More information on Life Skills courses can be found here.
