ENGLISH ADVANCED
Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units
The English Advanced 11–12 Syllabus is designed for students who have a particular interest and ability in a subject that will enrich their personal, intellectual, academic, social and vocational lives.
Students appreciate, analyse, evaluate and respond imaginatively and critically to literary texts drawn from a range of contexts and cultures, including literature from the past and present and from Australia. They study challenging written, spoken, visual, multimodal and digital texts that represent and reflect a changing world.
Students extend and deepen their ability to use language in nuanced, inventive and complex ways to express experiences, ideas and perspectives. They refine their understanding of the relationship between language, texts, context and meaning. Students extend their experiences in researching, accessing, evaluating and synthesising information and perspectives from a range of sources to fulfil a variety of purposes.
PREFERRED PRE-REQUISITES
This course requires extensive reading, writing and research and is only recommended for students who receive an A or high B in their Year 10 English ROSA grade.
It is highly recommended students complete Jesmond's Advanced English Curriculum Proficiency Assessment to be considered for this course.

HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
The examination will consist of 2 written papers worth 100 marks in total.
Paper 1: Texts and human experiences 40 marks
Time allowed: 1 hour and 30 minutes plus 10 minutes reading time.
- Short answer and one essay question.
Paper 2: Textual conversations, Critical study of literature, and The Craft of Writing 60 marks
Time allowed: 2 hours plus 5 minutes reading time.
- Two essays and an imaginative, discursive, persuasive and/or reflective response.
