An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and is essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English can develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent, and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
For many students, English will be more important as a life skill and as a necessary part of their working lives. We believe in the importance of communication skills for everyone, regardless of their career choice and as a vital part of our everyday personal lives.
FACILITIES
Classes generally take place in B Block which is an open and flexible learning space with a breakout area which provides lots of space for collaborative learning. The English Faculty also has a book room with an extensive collection of novels, plays and poetry collections for students to access.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
If you are a keen English student, we provide the opportunity for any student to get involved in the Lions Youth of the Year competition. This is a Public Speaking competition which occurs every year and involves students developing a speech on a topical issue of their choice. Students also must respond to a question on the day to assess their ability to ‘think on their feet.’
