Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units - Major work requirement

This course is for all students with an interest in all types of music regardless of their past musical experience. Students may already be proficient musicians, or beginners with little or no prior knowledge. Many students in the course will be very talented musicians.

The course caters for all students to explore their musical tastes. Music 1 is for students who would like to perform, discuss, and create music.

here are no essays in the HSC Examination and 70% of the HSC Examination is a Practical Examination.

PRE-REQUISITES

There are no pre-requisites, however all students will be required to sing or play a musical instrument in this Music 1 Course, so it is highly advised that students have some technical training and/or performance experience.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In Music 1 students perform and create both individually, and as part of an ensemble. Students explore the concepts of music through class discussion, critical listening and activities relating to a range of styles and genres. Students compose music and explore identification of key signature, chord building and modal composition.

HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Core performance 20%

• Elective 1 20%

• Elective 2 20%

• Elective 3 20%

• Aural listening exam extended responses: 30%

UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS COURSE

Students MUST perform at least 1 piece for the HSC exam, then students select 3 elective components:

• Performance

• Composition

• Viva voce (musicology).

Students can select any combination of the 3 elective components meaning a strong performer can perform 4 pieces and complete the aural listening exam.
