MATHEMATICS EXTENSION 1

Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 1 Unit

The content of this course, which includes the whole of the Mathematics Advanced course and its depth of treatment, is intended for students who have demonstrated a mastery of the skills of Stage 5 mathematics and who are interested in the study of further skills and ideas in mathematics.

The course is intended to give these students a thorough understanding of and competence in aspects of mathematics including many which are applicable to the real world. It has general educational merit and is also useful for concurrent studies of science, industrial arts and commerce.

PRE-REQUISITES

Mathematics Advanced.

The course is constructed on the assumption that students have achieved the outcomes in the core of the Mathematics course in Year 10, along with the recommended options.

Students are expected to be confident in their manipulation of a variety of algebraic expressions and processes, and competent in communicating their mathematical understanding using appropriate mathematical notations and reasoning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Year 11 Topics

• Functions: Further Work with Functions, Polynomials

• Trigonometric Functions: Further trigonometry

• Combinatorics: Permutations and Combinations, The Binomial Theorem

Year 12 Topics

• Proof: Proof by Mathematical Induction

• Vectors: Introduction to Vectors

• Trigonometric Functions: Inverse Trigonometric Functions

• Calculus: Further Calculus skills, Further applications of Calculus

• Statistical Analysis: The binomial distribution and sampling distribution of the mean

HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

• Examination Paper (Advanced: 3 Hours and Extension 1: 2 Hours – TOTAL: 5 Hours)

• Multiple Choice 10%

• Short and Extended Response 90%
