Investigating Science

INVESTIGATING SCIENCE

Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units

Investigating Science is a practical and flexible science course that supports students in exploring scientific ideas and solving real-world problems. The course develops skills in questioning, planning, conducting investigations, and drawing conclusions based on evidence.

It focuses on scientific thinking, problem-solving and decision-making through investigations connected to biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences.

Designed for all students, Investigating Science can be adapted to suit different school contexts and learning needs. It complements the study of other science subjects by building scientific literacy and helping students understand how science applies to everyday situations, community concerns, and global challenges.

This course can lead to a range of career opportunities in fields such as environmental science, health and medical research, science communication, laboratory and technical support, teaching, emergency services, engineering, and agricultural or food sciences.

PRE-REQUISITES

Successful completion of Year 10 Science.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Year 11 Topics

• Module 1: Cause and Effect - Observing

• Module 2: Cause and Effect - Inferences and Generalisations

• Module 3: Scientific Models

• Module 4: Theories and Laws

Year 12 Topics

• Module 5: Scientific Investigations

• Module 6: Technologies

• Module 7: Fact or Fallacy?

• Module8: Science and Society

HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

A three-hour written exam comprised of:

  • Multiple choice 20 marks
  • Short answer 80 marks

UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS COURSE

Practical investigations are an essential part of both the Year 11 and Year 12 course and must occupy a minimum of 35 hours of course time, including time for practical investigations in depth studies.

Students can combine Investigating Science with ONE or TWO other Science courses selected from Biology. Chemistry, Physics or Earth & Environmental Science.
