Mathematics Standard

MATHEMATICS STANDARD

Board Developed Course (ATAR) - 2 Units

The Mathematics Standard Year 11 course is a common course for all students focused on enabling students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. It provides students with the opportunities to develop an understanding of, and competence in, aspects of mathematics through a large variety of real-world applications and to support a range of Year 12 subjects.

The Year 11 Mathematics Standard course is undertaken by all students intending to study either the HSC Mathematics Standard 2 course or the HSC Mathematics Standard 1 course.

PRE-REQUISITES

Mathematics Standard is designed for students who want to extend their skills beyond Stage 5 but are not seeking the in-depth knowledge of higher mathematics that the study of calculus would provide.

The Mathematics Standard course is recommended for students who gained a RoSA Grade of C5 or Above.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Year 11 Topics

• Algebra: Formulas and Equations, Linear Relationships

• Financial Mathematics: Earning Money and Managing Money

• Measurement: Applications of Measurement, Time and Location

• Networks: Networks, paths and trees

• Statistics: Data Analysis

Year 12 Topics (Mathematics Standard 2)

• Algebra: Algebraic Relationships

• Financial Mathematics: Investments and Loans, Annuities

• Measurement: Trigonometry. Ratios and Rates

• Networks: Network flow, Critical Path Analysis

• Statistics: Bivariate Data Analysis, Relative Frequency and Probability, The Normal Distribution.

HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

Examination Paper - 2.5 hours

Multiple Choice 15%

Short and Extended Response 85%
