Board Developed VET Course (ATAR)
Certificate II
The course offers practical, hands-on learning centred on the building and construction industry.
It covers a wide range of services; from planning and surveying to structural construction and finishing services such as painting and decorating. Occupational titles may include builder’s labourer, painter and decorator, carpenter, tiler, joiner, bricklayer.
PRE-REQUISITES
There are no entry requirements for this qualification. It is an advantage if students have studied Industrial Technology as an elective course in years 9 and 10.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Year 11 Topics
• WHS requirements, policies, and procedures in the construction industry, including a White card
• Working effectively and sustainably
• Planning and organising work tasks
• Carrying out measurements and calculations
• Undertaking a basic construction project
• Use of a range of hand, battery, and power tools
• Interpreting basic plans and specifications
Year 12 Topics
• Gaining practical industry experience
• Developing competency in construction tools
• Applying costing principles to basic projects
• WHS legislation, regulations, codes of practice and managing hazards and risks
• Organisational policies and procedures in construction workplaces
• Job safety analysis (JSA) and safe work method statements (SWMS)
• Quality assurance regulations and Australian Standards
Students must complete 240 indicative hours of course work and a minimum of 70 hours work placement in an appropriate construction work environment.
HSC EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
There is an optional HSC examination for ATAR purposes which is only available after completion of the 240 hour course.
The exam involves a written examination consisting of multiple-choice, short answers and extended response items.
UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS COURSE
HSC VET courses are competency-based. Students’ complete units of competency to achieve CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction.
Covered leather shoes are mandatory for practical lessons, and steel-capped work boots are required from the beginning of Term 2. Students will be expected to pay for the materials used in the production of practical projects.
