Extra curricular

Callaghan College Jesmond has a range of extra curricular activities that students can participate in.

Surfest

Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus has been in partnership with Surfest for the last ten years. Our students are involved in every aspect of the event from the catering, multimedia and marketing teams, judging area, photography, building the compound and administration.

The relationship the Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus has with the Surfest organisation is an acknowledged exemplar in Vocational Education and Community Partnerships.

This partnership won the regional VET in schools Award of Excellence in 2009 and was also nominated as a finalist in the NSW State Training awards for 2008 and 2009 and 2010. In 2012 the partnership won the Newcastle Sports awards for Outstanding School and Community partnership.

Further information is available on the Surfest website.

Model United Nations Assembly

MUNA is an annual event that is part of an International Rotary project to educate senior high school students (Years 10 - 12) on the United Nations organisation and its vital commitment to world peace, in addition to health, education and living standards around the world.

The event provides an excellent forum for students to develop and practice their public speaking skills whilst debating on topical world issues.

Mock trial

The mock trial competition is open to students studying legal studies or a similar subject. It is run by The Law Society of New South Wales. The competition involves school teams competing against each other in a practical court room scenario. It is a great way to learn about the law and to increase understanding of the basis of our judicial system.

The competition also helps students to increase basic skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading and analysing. The goal is not to win for the sake of winning, but to learn and understand the meaning of good citizenship through participation in our system of law and justice. All who participate in the mock trial competition are winners in this sense.

SES Program

Our SES school cadets training program provides students with the opportunity to develop their leadership, decision making, team work and communication skills in a practical hands on environment.

The students gain accreditation towards their basic SES induction training. Targets career in defence forces, police, emergency services.
