Human Society and Its Environment

Human society and its environment (HSIE) is the exploration of the world around us. The world we live in is a social, cultural and physical environment that is ever changing and evolving, from historical times to the present. Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus HSIE Department offers a vast selection of subjects that bring our world history, geography, people, societies and culture to life.

Our staff’s vision is to open the eyes of our students to the world and its environs and equip them with the learning experiences, knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to participate more effectively and sensitively in our global community.

Our students finish their Higher School Certificate (HSC) with the skills to be future leaders:

  • creativity and innovation
  • critical thinking and problem solving
  • communication and collaboration
  • information literacy
  • media literacy
  • ICT (Information Communication and Technology) literacy
  • life and career skills.

We take traditional learning and content and integrate them with these skills and strategies to build student capacity for lifelong learning and active citizenship. We examine our world in its physical and human dimensions through a choice of eleven subject studies.

The staff represents a wealth of experience in subject knowledge, including HSC marking, curriculum writing, professional leadership in content areas, VET trained teachers as well as providing breadth of experience giving the faculty both depth and flexibility in curriculum delivery.

The HSIE staff also is highly involved in whole school teams providing leadership in professional learning, welfare and student support as well as curriculum leadership.
